The Hype

From back cover: Have you ever dreamed about what it would be like to have a Threesome? Let sex and relationship expert Tristan Taormino help make your erotic wish come true as she dispels myths and misconceptions and gives concrete advice about how to have safe, responsible, and fun threeway sex. You’ll learn how to negotiate for what you want, choose a playmate, set boundaries, communicate and build trust.

What to Expect

You’ll experience male/female intercourse, lesbian sex, sex toys, vaginal sex, & oral sex. The DVD opens with Tristan doing a workshop about Threesomes and covers the following:

  • Different Kinds of Threesomes
  • Picking a playmate
  • Limits and Rules a Couple can Set
  • Importance of Following Rules
  • Mentions to Check in with Partner During Play and for everyone to talk after play

Then you’re treated to 3 scenes illustrating FFM Threesome, MFM Threesome and FFM Threesome. You can watch scenes with or without instructional voice-over and pop-ups. Extras include video on Safe Sex.

What I Liked

This DVD is geared towards couples, not singles trying to get a 3-way on. Information within is straightforward and can help a couple to visualize and talk about having threesomes. It’s a starting point.

A couple can see different positions available for FFM, MFM Threesomes. Even though my husband and I have been having 3-ways for a while, we still discovered a couple of variations on positions to incorporate with a lady playmate.

Penny, Harmony, Justice

Hottest/Most Educational Scene

Penny, Harmony and Justice presented the best scene for a couple to watch and learn from. The success of this scene is mostly due to Penny Flame. You can easily see that she’s no newcomer to FFM Threesomes. She clearly knows how to have sex with more than 1 person at a time. She knows how to keep herself involved in the action, even if getting involved isn’t an obvious or easy fit.

My favorite part of the scene is the very beginning when all 3 get on the bed to start to play. Before she gets on the bed, she grabs her Hitachi Magic Wand and tosses it on the bed, so her toy is always easily available. She doesn’t ever have to fumble about for it, something that can slow down play or cause an awkward pause. She’s shows that it’s good to have some forethought on what you’d like to do and gather what tools, I mean toys, you may need ahead of time. She also provides an example of how to communicate with everyone during a 3-some.

What I Didn’t Like

While the information within is helpful, it’s too basic for an “Expert” guide. I probably wouldn’t be so disappointed if it was titled, “Threesome Basics” or “Threesome 101”. However, it’s titled “Expert” guide, so I’m expecting it to provide viewers with nittty, gritty, I’ve been there before, “Expert” kind of information. Unfortunately the information within is no more informative than a simple Threesome Information search on Google.

For example, Tristan talks about speaking up during play if you’re feeling jealous, left out or uncomfortable with what’s going on. That’s true, one should speak up, however, the viewer is not given any “expert” details on HOW to express that during play or how to express it in a way that will help save face during play. Threesome play, especially first time, can be very difficult, awkward and/or emotionally charged. I would expect an “Expert” guide DVD to show the viewer options to handle this. For instance, they could have shown one of the women feeling left out and saying something playfully like, “That’s so hot, I want some too” or “Let’s really blow his mind and suck his cock together”. In my experience, most of the time, when jealousy creeps in it’s because one partner is feeling left out. By showing the viewer ways to express themselves that help them to get back involved will save face and will allow play to continue and maybe even result in the jealousy turning into excitement. And that’s not the only time I had that thought while watching. I’ve been having threesomes for many years and my husband and I kept coming up with “Expert” tips that could have easily been shared but weren’t.

So this DVD has been designed for couples to watch together, however, I had difficulty in the 2 out of the 3 scenes figuring out who the couple was supposed to be. If the couple isn’t immediately obvious, how is a real life couple supposed to learn about important issues like staying connected or not getting jealous, when it just looked like 3 porn stars having sex?

And to top it off, the threesome scenes weren’t that exciting for porn scenes which really miffed me. You’d think that maybe if they were showing you different scenarios to deal with 3-some issues, the scenes may not be that exciting, however, they weren’t showing you any of that. The scenes were just not that exciting with or without the instructional pop ups and voiceover.

All the communication among the players that was stressed in the workshop, was not displayed in the sex scenes. In fact, every scene moved unrealistically smoothly, like in a porno. This DVD, while meaning to arouse, is mostly meant to instruct. Real life 3somes, especially the first few are a bit clumsy, a little awkward and even seasoned pros like my husband and I still don’t move through one seamlessly. It was silly, at one point during the MFM scene, one of the guys walks out of the camera’s view and vanishes for a few minutes while the other guy and woman have intercourse. Where is he? What is he doing? Is he masturbating off to the side watching the couple have sex? Did he go to the bathroom? People don’t just vanish during a 3-way. This was an opportunity to show how to continue play when one person isn’t involved in the action, this is especially important during a MFM Threesome when the men aren’t Bi. The camera could have panned out to show everything, but unfortunately didn’t.

Daisy, Derrick, CHristian

I think Tristan tried to cover too much in this one DVD. She talks about both FFM & MFM Threesomes, however, they’re both very different and trying to tackle both kinds on one DVD may be one reason why other important “Expert” kind of information was left out. For example, another issue that could have been tackled, but wasn’t, is if the ladies in a threesome aren’t Bi. It can still be successful, but this “Expert” guide doesn’t cover that. However, Nina Hartley covers that and more in her Guide to Threesomes DVD. There is also no discussion about soft swap in which, for example, the lady playmate doesn’t have intercourse with the male partner of the couple. That kind of play is also an option and also successful.

Annoying Bits

This DVD, like the others in the series, is shot in High Def. I don’t have a high def television, nor was I offered a non high def version to watch on the DVD, so all the cute, little instructional bubbles popped up halfway OFF my screen. The full picture didn’t even fit on my television. I have the Expert Guide to Fellatio and didn’t experience the same issue.

I expected the pop up bubbles, along with the sex scenes to elaborate on Tristan’s workshop tips and I don’t feel they were used to the fullest.

Vivid has a ton of phone sex, product commercials before the movie starts and I couldn’t immediately jump to the main menu, I had to fast forward through all of it every time I watched the DVD.

Confusing/Disappointing Bit

In the workshop, Tristan brings up the importance of everyone talking after play. While she’s talking there’s an edit to a quick shot showing Tristan talking with the playmates. Now it wouldn’t be totally realistic with Tristan kind of counseling the group, but to show anything at all, would at least be an example of the kinds of things covered during such a discussion. I searched my DVD for that scene specifically and couldn’t find it.

Overall Thoughts on Tristan Taormino’s Expert Guide to Threesomes

After having LOVED the “Expert Guide to Oral Sex: Fellatio” DVD, I was expecting the same reaction to this one, however, I was enormously disappointed. I expected as I’m sure many others will expect an “Expert” Guide to provide more information than what’s on this DVD. The information during the workshop is basic without any elaboration or examples by our hostess, Tristan, with sex scenes that do nothing to illustrate the finer points that Tristan barely covered in the workshop. The pop-up bubbles don’t really share those important points or provide more details either, if you can even see them on your screen.

The sex scenes are not realistic, in that they don’t show a couple with a new playmate coming together to have sex. The sex is smooth porn star sex and unfortunately, it’s not even that good.

My biggest problem with this DVD is the title. If it had been called anything else but “Expert” I wouldn’t be so disappointed. An “Expert” guide shouldn’t leave more questions than answers and I feel this will. I feel a couple can’t confidently go into a 3-way after viewing this alone. Of course a couple should be getting as much information as possible beforehand, but as an “Expert” guide, I don’t have any desire to recommend it. There’s too much detailed information missing from it and there are other resources that cover and illustrate the topic much better that don’t call themselves “Expert” and that are more affordable . I would say this one’s a pass. Check out my other reviews of threesome resources because, I feel they’re more worth your hard earned dollars.
